Sablefish harvesting sustainable seafood

Supporting Harvesters

Where It All Began

In 2022, the non-profit Eat on the Wild Side recognized a problem that needed solving. Sablefish, a distinctly nutritious and abundant species that dwells deep in the waters of the Pacific Northwest, was largely unknown to American consumers. Eat on the Wild Side understood that by informing the public about this highly sustainable resource, it could inspire consumers to make environmentally sound choices about seafood without sacrificing quality or taste.

With funding from a Saltonstall-Kennedy grant, Eat on the Wild Side launched the marketing project NW Sablefish in 2023. The goal is to raise awareness and appreciation for sustainable wild sablefish among U.S consumers. NW Sablefish seeks to introduce this fish to a wider audience by highlighting its culinary versatility, its nutritive value, and its environmental benefits through engaging content that supports consumer knowledge. Partnering with innovative Northwest chefs and restaurants, NW Sablefish invites you to be part of the solution for sustainable seafood consumption by learning more about this distinctive seafood option.

Our Mission

NW Sablefish is a branded marketing project created by a group of dedicated sablefish harvesters and the non-profit Eat on the Wild Side. Our mission is to:

  1. Raise public awareness about the sustainable management of the sablefish fishery through public outreach.

  2. Support harvesters by promoting sablefish as a premium, domestic seafood product through restaurant and chef partnerships.

Our Values

Cuisine

Celebrate and promote NW Sablefish as a refined delicacy that is versatile and flavorful.  Northwest sablefish is the gold standard when it comes to effortless taste and we aspire to help consumers feel confident in their preparation of sablefish.

Sustainability

Inform the public on the sustainable management of the wild NW Sablefish fishery.  Committed to resource conservation, we inform consumers about the responsible management and MSC certification of the fishery. Highlighting the selective harvesting method known as “fixed-gear operations,” we commend harvesters who have focused on resource conservation since the fishery’s early beginnings.

Health

Educate consumers on the health benefits of wild Northwest sablefish.  At the heart of our vision is a dedication to consumer health and well-being. We are passionate about educating the public on the exceptional nutritional benefits of wild Northwest sablefish, including its high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and high-quality protein.

Community

Foster connections between harvesters, chefs, and consumers to promote wild Northwest sablefish as a delicious, sustainable, and nutritious seafood choice for restaurant and home cooks alike. We believe in the power of community to drive positive change, and we work to develop and support these relationships through dialogue and transparency.
